LEO: “In a special way I’d like to thank Mr Olah for accepting our invitation…in the name of the Church, I accept your invitation to walk together, to listen, to speak & together to find the way for humanity in this time of AI”
The first papal encyclical on artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas (May 15, 38,000 words), contains lots of truisms but also a bit of everything and nothing. The central contradiction of Magnifica Humanitas is that it condemns centralized technological power and “Babel-like” global systems, while simultaneously demanding supranational governing structures to regulate AI worldwide. In the encyclical, "Babel" becomes a symbol of a civilization built on centralized power, uniformity, and human self-sufficiency. §5 warns that private, often transnational actors possess “resources and capabilities superior to those of many governments,” giving them “impressive power over all of humanity.” However, the proposed solution is stronger international coordination and global governance of AI. The encyclical calls for an “international order” (§33), “universal fraternity” (§44), and globally shared moral principles for governing AI. §64 calls for “more effective forms of cooperation …More
Christopher Olah, a Canadian billionaire businessman and researcher who co-founded AI giant Anthropic, sitting in the Synodal Hall and speaking next to Pope Leo said, closing his speech: "I'd like to close with a request. We need more of the world - religious communities, civil society, scholars, governments - to do what His Holiness has done here: to take this seriously, to look closely, and to push events in a better direction. We need informed critics who will tell the labs when we are failing. We need moral voices that the incentives cannot bend. Today is just the beginning - the start of a long collaboration between those of us who are building this and those who can see what we, from inside, cannot. Today is a powerful illustration of the form this global project of good will might take. Let it also be a decisive first step toward a hopeful future for magnificent humanity."
"Another time the same person said to him, “ I have gained a fifth by keeping my corn.” “But I,” replied the Saint /Yvo/, “a hundredfold by giving it immediately away.” During the Lent of 1303, he felt his strength failing him; yet far from abating any thing in his austerities, he thought himself obliged to redouble his fervor in proportion as he advanced nearer to eternity."
Pentecost (Whit-Sunday) FIFTY days after Easter, the apostles and disciples of Jesus Christ were assembled in an upper chamber, engaged in prayer, according to the recommendation of the Divine Master, and awaiting the accomplishment of the promise He had made to them, of sending them a Comforting Spirit, the Paraclete, who should teach' them all things. Lo I a great noise, as of a rushing tempest, was suddenly heard, the house was rocked to and fro, and tongues of fire were seen resting on the head of each one. At once all were changed into new men, their minds being endowed with full understanding of the Scriptures and of the wonders they had hitherto witnessed without comprehending, and their souls were filled with strength from on high ; thenceforth they belonged no more to themselves but to the work of the Gospel. From that time forth this Divine Spirit has not ceased to pour itself forth upon the Church to enlighten, confirm, protect, and guide; it has not ceased communicating …More
Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira Folha de S.Paulo, on September 11, 1968 “I don’t like the motto of your society,” quipped Dona Cesarina* (see footnote), an acquaintance I had not seen in many years, as I met her by chance near the Conde Prates Building. Dona Cesarina is still a young grandmother who is always on the leading edge of all modernity. However, despite Dona Cesarina’s permanent effort to keep “up-to-date,” she still has something homey, peaceable and even conservative about her which is no doubt left over from other eras in which she lived. This image, incidentally, she deems inadequate to her public persona, and thus carefully tries to hide it. I took advantage of this likable “weak” side of my lively interlocutor to ask her, “Why don’t you like our motto? Does even the word ‘family’ displease you?” Caught off-guard, Dona Cesarina replied, “Well, I wouldn’t go that far. Let’s say that, in a pinch, ‘family’ is all right. It is even beautiful that you put it on your motto …More

Pro-homosexual Archbishop Josef Grünwidl of Vienna - one of the many questionable appointments by Leo XIV - has confirmed that the controversial rector of St. Stephen's Cathedral, Rev Toni Faber, 64, will retire. The cathedral will receive new leadership in summer 2027. Society priest Faber has attended public dance festivals with a woman for years and has questioned celibacy. He has also supported same-sex blessings. In an interview with Austrian state radio ORF on Saturday, Archbishop Grünwidl claimed that his decision was mainly due to Rector Faber's long tenure. Archbishop Grünwidl noted that no one in the history of the Cathedral has held the post of rector for 30 years, describing Faber’s tenure as “a record”. However, the archbishop stressed that this does not mean that Rev. Faber will withdraw completely from pastoral work or leave St. Stephen’s Square. The Archbishop even praised Rev. Faber’s decades of service and emphasised their close personal relationship. “We were …More
