World’s Oldest Trappist Monk, 108, Survivor of Communist Persecution, Has Died. Fr. Benedict Chao, the world’s oldest Trappist monk, died on July 31 at Our Lady of Joy Abbey on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, at the age of 108. Born in Hebei, China, in 1918, Chao entered monastic life in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He belonged to a generation of Chinese Trappists whose monasteries were destroyed during Communist persecution. After fleeing mainland China, Chao and fellow monks lived for a time in Canada and the United States before rebuilding their monastic community in Hong Kong.

French Film Turns Catholic Faith Into "Joke": The French film Tombé du ciel, due in cinemas on August 12, follows Ilyes, a young Muslim from Roubaix who ends up at a Catholic boarding school in Burgundy, where his unfamiliarity with Catholic beliefs and practices becomes a recurring source of blasphemies about the faith. In one sequence, Ilyes, unable to have breakfast, casually eats unconsecrated hosts from a packet intended for Sunday Mass. “He is eating the whole Body of Christ!” another character exclaims, referring to the Catholic belief in the Eucharist. Ilyes responds by joking that people should not say he has “eaten people.” He is then ordered to go immediately to confession, which becomes another “joke” when he mistakes the confessional for a cupboard.

Ukrainian soldiers report critical conditions on the front lines. A brigade commander claims his troops have gone months without rotation or regular supplies of water, food, and medicine. A group of Ukrainian soldiers took to social media to say they were forced to drink their own urine due to Kiev’s failure to rotate or provide them with supplies. Blessed Karl Leisner - August 12 The Blessed Karl Leisner (28 February 1915 in Rees – 12 August 1945 in Planegg, Germany) was a Roman Catholic priest interned in the Dachau concentration camp. He died of tuberculosis shortly after being liberated by the Allied forces. He has been declared a martyr and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 23 June 1996. Leisner was born on 28 February 1915, the oldest of five children. When he was six years old, the family moved to Kleve, a city on the lower Rhine, where his father worked as a civil servant. He attended school and completed his gymnasium studies in 1934. During his youth, he became an altar boy and, at the suggestion of the high school chaplain, former a Catholic youth group, the Saint Werner Group. The Priest Barracks of Dachau Concentration (in German Pfarrerblock, or Priesterblock) incarcerated clergy who had opposed the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler. From December 1940, Berlin ordered the transfer of clerical prisoners held at other camps, and Dachau became the centre for imprisonment of clergymen. Of a total of 2,720 clerics recorded as imprisoned at Dachau some 2,579 (or 94.88%) were Roman Catholics. Among the other denominations, there were 109 Protestants, 22 Orthodox, 8 Old Catholics and Mariavites and 2 Muslims. A short time after the canonisation of St. Bernardine of Sienna, there died at Cascia, in the kingdom of Naples, a child aged eleven years, named Blasio Massei. His parents had inspired him with the same devotion which they them- selves had towards this new saint, and the latter was not slow to recompense it.
