One of the angels flanking the tomb of Italy’s last king, Umberto II, in the San Lorenzo in Lucina basilica in Rome appears to bear the face of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to LaRepubblica.it, the angel was originally painted with a generic face prior to recent restoration work. The basilica is currently undergoing broader restoration work, and the Diocese of Rome says this was meant to proceed 'without changes or additions'. Therefore, the alteration of the angel’s face was attributed to the decorative restorer, who was a volunteer, and was not communicated to heritage authorities. Bruno Valentinetti, the restorer, has denied intentionally depicting Meloni, claiming that he was merely replicating imagery from around 25 years ago, using traditional designs and colours. The Diocese says it is investigating the matter further. Prime Minister Meloni responded humorously on social media, writing that she “definitely doesn’t look like an angel”. #newsUyjtlhuqux

Saint Toma Khuong, also known as Saint Thomas Khuong or Tôma Khuông (full Vietnamese name often given as Thomas Ngô Túc Khuông or Thomas Khuông Tuc Ngo), was a Vietnamese priest and martyr born around 1780 in Tonkin (northern Vietnam), likely in the province of Hưng Yên. He came from a noble family, possibly the son of a mandarin, and was raised as a Christian from childhood in a time when the faith had taken root in Vietnam through missionary efforts but faced recurring hostility from imperial authorities. Khuong became a diocesan priest serving in the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin. He was also affiliated with the Dominican order as a tertiary (a lay member of the Dominican Third Order or confraternity for priests), reflecting his deep commitment to prayer, study, and pastoral work. Known for his piety, intellectual gifts dedicated to exploring faith through reason, and dedication to his flock, he ministered discreetly amid periodic anti-Christian persecutions under emperors …More
On Wednesday, a Swiss court found left-wing politician Sanija Ameti guilty of sharing photos in 2024 of her shooting at pictures of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. The former Green Liberal Party (GLP) member was given a suspended fine totalling 3,500 Swiss francs for disturbing freedom of religion. While the judge acknowledged that her actions showed clear disregard for the Christian faith, the court ruled that Ameti had not intended to cause offence, citing emotional distress. Following the incident, Ameti apologised, deleted the post, resigned from the GLP and lost her job.
