On August 5, settlers entered the property of a Christian family belonging to the local parish, cut through the fence and brought a flock of sheep onto the family’s land. The incident follows reports of fires, damage to farmland and repeated incursions onto private property. Around 1,200 Christians remain in Taybeh, a West Bank town traditionally identified with the biblical Ephraim. Parish priest Bashar Fawadleh has appealed for international attention: “Do not forget Taybeh! Taybeh must not vanish into silence.”

Benedict Chao, the world’s oldest Trappist monk, died on July 31 at Our Lady of Joy Abbey on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, at the age of 108. Born in Hebei, China, in 1918, Chao entered monastic life in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He belonged to a generation of Chinese Trappists whose monasteries were destroyed during Communist persecution. After fleeing mainland China, Chao and fellow monks lived for a time in Canada and the United States before rebuilding their monastic community in Hong Kong.
