New Zealand to Build First New Cathedral in Over 120 Years: The Diocese of Christchurch has unveiled the design for the new Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, which will stand on the site of the original cathedral destroyed after the devastating Canterbury earthquakes (2010-2011). The new cathedral will preserve historic stained-glass windows. It's a roughly $80 million New Zealand dollar project (about US$46m). The diocese is currently in a fundraising phase. Partner is the architecture firm Warren and Mahoney. The style is "an ancient design, a Romanesque and Gothic hybrid model".

Medjugorje Has Been Vandalized: Two acts of vandalism have targeted the Marian shrine at Medjugorje. According to local authorities, the outdoor altar at St James's Church was set on fire. Furthermore, graffiti was found on a statue of Our Lady at Podbrdo, including the words 'Devil in a skirt'. The first report concerning the statue was received by the police at 4:30 a.m., followed by a second report at 5:00 a.m. after the altar was set alight. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread to the church. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage of the suspected arsonist.

The Vatican has published new guidelines today, "Recollecting: Accompanying the Preparation of the Local Church's Evaluation Assembly," for the next stage of the Synod on Synodality. Every diocese is required to hold evaluation assemblies during the first half of 2027 to assess how the Synod's Final Document has been implemented. Bishops will lead the evaluation, establish or reactivate synodal teams, and approve a six- to eight-page narrative report to be submitted to Rome. They are also instructed to describe "transformations in decision-making processes, and reforms of structures" as part of their narrative report. Interreligious synodality Each diocese will also hold an evaluation assembly using the method of "conversation in the Spirit." The guidelines state that dioceses should consider inviting "representatives of other Christian Churches and communities or other religions as observers." Leo XIV Returned to the Vatican: Leo XIV returned to the Vatican on Monday evening after a three-week summer holiday at Castel Gandolfo. His upcoming schedule includes Assisi (August 6), San Marino and Rimini (August 22), an apostolic journey to France (September 25–28) with visits to Paris, Lourdes, Metz and UNESCO headquarters, and the World Meeting on the implementation of Amoris laetitia at the Vatican (October 7–14). A visit to Peru is expected in November, although the Holy See has not yet officially announced it.

Patrick Buisson, the former adviser to former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, named the Fraternity of Saint Vincent Ferrier as the universal beneficiary of his estate in a will drafted in March 2021, reports LeMonde.fr on July 4. The community follows the traditional Dominican rite. Buisson died on December 26, 2023, at age 74. He bequeathed not only his personal assets but also a substantial collection of political archives, including manuscripts, notebooks, correspondence, digital files and recordings from his years at the Élysée Palace. Archives relating to Sarkozy's presidency - including Buisson's secret recordings made between 2007 and 2012 - are at the center of an ongoing dispute. Buisson's son, Georges, has challenged the will and argues the archives are of public interest and should go to the French National Archives. Around 500 nude volunteers gathered outside the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, on Sunday for a photographic installation by American artist Spencer Tunick as part of the Culture & Business Pride festival. Participants, painted in the rainbow colors, posed in front of the cathedral on the feast of St. Anne, the city's patron saint. The project was planned in advance as an official festival event, with backing from local tourism and government bodies. Organizers said the artwork celebrated diversity and homosexuality. According to El País, the local bishop, Monsignor José Mazuelos, said he did not object to the nude performance in front of his cathedral: "I have no problem. This reading is a call to examine ourselves, as we are the temple of the Lord, and to ensure we are not stealing from God what belongs to Him. St. Paul warns against idolatry, covetousness, and fornication, urging us to prioritize our faith and avoid distractions. St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians emphasizes the need for holiness, urging us to reject impurity, covetousness, gossip, and bad language. Fr.
