Justice Minister Sean Fraser cited two reasons: no medical consensus on when mental illness is incurable, and poor access to psychiatric care. However, the Liberals voted against a Conservative bill seeking the same ban. They argued its wording was too broad. Instead, they plan their own bill, combining the ban with a proposal to allow advance euthanasia requests for patients with dementia. Critics accuse the government of using the ban to push through this expansion.

Suicide of a priest: Bernard Card, 73, parish priest of Sainte-Chantal Church in Dijon, France, has committed suicide (pictured left). The Diocese of Dijon announced his “tragic death,” which occurred during the night of October 4–5 at the Sainte-Chantal presbytery. Archbishop Antoine Hérouard (pictured right) described the suicide as “completely unexpected and difficult to understand.” According to reports citing his message to diocesan clergy, Rev. Card had recently been tired and had previously been deeply affected by the suicide of his brother. Ordained in 1981, Rev. Card served the Diocese of Dijon for more than four decades and had been parish priest of Sainte-Chantal since 2019. Despite the suicide, he will be buried at Sainte-Chantal on October 13. “The Creator is the source of human dignity, not the State.” Cardinal Willem Jacobus Eijk of Utrecht, Netherlands, argued in an October 8 interview with LaNuovaBq.it that democratic majorities cannot determine fundamental human rights. Without recognition of God as Creator, the State assumes the power to decide who deserves legal protection and who does not, including unborn children. Strange words. We can talk about our Creator in many different praises: as the Source of life, truth, love, beauty, our reasonable soul and its salvation. But human dignity or "human rights"? God is no suffragist or cheap politician. And He is no humanist either. In his relationship, as the creature, towards God man does not need any human dignity/human rights and cannot claim one (as he is unworthy) unless he wants to claim "non serviam" - just as the ancient serpent. And the State, just as the man, should also serve God which the post-conciliar revolution forgot about. It is the source of things forbidden to the State, killing children included. The God's direct commandment, God's direct order, yes also the natural law. Not any inalienable dignity or "human rights". Hell is full of people who claimed them.
