Leo XIV wants to beatify controversial Aids-Priest Don Luigi. Leo XIV has opened the way towards the beatification of Luigi Di Liegro (1928–1997), a Roman priest who wanted to be close to people dying of AIDS. The pope made the announcement on Friday during the diocesan assembly in the Basilica of St John Lateran. He said he had “gladly approved” the steps necessary to begin the diocesan investigation into Di Liegro’s life, virtues and reputation for holiness. The most controversial episode of Di Liegro’s ministry came in 1988. As head of Caritas Rome, he insisted on opening a home for people with AIDS at Villa Glori in Parioli — an affluent Roman neighbourhood. It was the height of the AIDS panic. HIV was associated particularly with drug users and homosexuals. Residents protested. More than a thousand signatures were reportedly collected against the home. St Peter’s Basilica and cathedrals will be abused as event venues to mark a United Nations observance. On 21 September, the UN International Day of Peace, St Peter's Basilica ’s will play Sounds of Loss, an international audio installation by German filmmaker Philip Gröning. For 49 hours, 1,096 prerecorded clicks and taps will sound at irregular intervals, each intended to represent a person killed in war. Gröning and his team recorded more than 24,000 sounds - from clocks, light switches, locks, pencils and other everyday objects. The installation is designed to span 21 September across all world time zones. At the Vatican, the installation is located in the atrium of St Peter’s Basilica. Other venues include the Berliner Dom and Zionskirche in Berlin, St John the Divine in New York, Verona Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne and the National Museum of Singapore. The Saint-Colomban church is being built in Serris, Val d’Europe, near Disneyland Paris. The site will include a parish center, cultural center and Catholic school and covers about 4,000 m². On 18 September, three new bells were blessed and lifted into the 36-metre-high bell tower. The ceremony was led by Bishop Jean-Yves Nahmias of Meaux and auxiliary bishop Guillaume de Lisle. The bells weigh 275 kg, 190 kg and 155 kg. The largest is Geneviève-Étienne and the smallest Espérance (“Hope”).

A bomb exploded outside the Greek Orthodox cathedral in Hama, Syria. The videos from the scene show the aftermath inside and outside St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hama after a bomb exploded on 13 September, on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The blast shattered windows and damaged the church and nearby cars, but no one was killed or injured. Syrian authorities opened an investigation. No group has claimed responsibility.
Last Sunday, there was another bomb attack on a church in Syria. This time, however, no one was killed or injured. Security camera footage shows a masked man placing the bomb underneath a car parked directly in front of the Greek Orthodox St. George’s Cathedral in Hama. The bomb exploded later that evening. September 14 (the day after the attack) is traditionally celebrated in the Greek Orthodox Church as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. There was no church service taking place in the cathedral at the time, which likely saved many lives. However, the church was damaged in the attack, and many windows were shattered by the explosion.
