On the same week that media outlets such DW posted articles about closed German Churches being repurposed as gyms while others wrote of the news that 47 Catholics leave the German Church every day, it was important the Stuttgart’s Saint Mary’s Parish put their best foot forward to get people back in the pews.
Instead, they put on what is objectively the weirdest thing we have ever seen in a Catholic liturgy. In fact, maybe in any capacity ever.
Their parish website, when looking forward to the event, stated:
The incarnation of God in a vulnerable world is the focus of the televised service and is powerfully illustrated by a performative Nativity scene featuring a real person wrapped in rice paper
One of the organisers of the event said:
We don’t want to provoke, but we also don’t want to look away. We want to inspire.
Well, you can’t always get what you want and it appears as though the only thing that they inspired was revulsion across the globe.[…]
