A group of Catholics in Lebanon have launched a legal bid to prevent an upcoming performance by Portuguese priest Guilherme Peixoto. His "music" blends electronic dance beats with religious imagery. He is scheduled to perform at the AHM nightclub in Beirut on 10 January. The petitioners have submitted a request to a Beirut summary affairs judge, seeking to halt the concert. They argue that the performance 'undermines church values' and 'misrepresents Christian rituals', citing concerns over a priest performing as a DJ in a nightclub. However, resorting to the state in such matters is futile. Padre Peixoto is due to preside over a Eucharist in Kaslik on the same day. Supporters rightly argue that his ministry and artistic work are officially recognised by church authorities in many countries.
