Catholic University Affirms Appointment of Abortion Activist Susan Ostermann to Leadership Post
The University of Notre Dame, operated by the Congregation of Holy Cross, has confirmed the appointment of Susan Ostermann as director of its Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, effective July 1, 2026.
Ostermann, an associate professor in the Keough School of Global Affairs, has publicly advocated for abortion in multiple opinion columns, describing laws restricting abortion as “violence,” “sexual abuse,” and “trauma”. She even linked opposition to abortion with "white supremacy". Her writings have appeared in outlets including Salon, The Indianapolis Star, and the Chicago Tribune.
The appointment drew sharp criticism from Fr Wilson Miscamble, a Holy Cross priest and professor emeritus at Notre Dame, who argued that the decision undermines the university’s Catholic identity and called on the Board of Fellows to rescind it.
Other faculty members also raised concerns about the tone and substance of Ostermann’s abortion advocacy.

Cardinal Blase Cupich, 76, of Chicago questioned in 2021 Pope Francis’ idea of appointing Bishop Robert Prevost as Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, according to LaNuovaBq.it on January 30.
Cardinal Cupich had ambitions to be appointed to the position himself.
Such a move would have blocked his compatriot’s path to the cardinalate and, in all likelihood, to the papacy.
Francis decided otherwise and appointed Bishop Prevost as Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops in January 2023.

Pope Leo XIV is expected to return to the Apostolic Palace, but not to the former papal apartment, reports the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Friday.
He plans to move into a top-floor attic-style apartment located one level above the papal residence. It is barely visible from the outside.
The apartment is described as being located above the papal apartments, on the uppermost level between the 'Third Loggia' and the roof. It is situated in a self-contained section of the palace.
Inside the new apartment are bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, a fitness room, a small private chapel and a roof terrace. On the terrace, there is a replica of the Lourdes grotto, placed there during the pontificate of John Paul II.

A priest, 57, former member of the conservative French community St Jean, was tried on 29 January before the tribunal correctionnel d’Alençon, Orne, France, on charges of corruption of tw minors over the age of 15 and possession of pornographic images involving minors.
He was found guilty and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, fully suspended.
The case concerns acts alleged to have occurred in July 2014 in London during a language trip. The priest was accompanying two young men, brothers of each other, both over 15, who regarded him as a mentor.
According to the investigation, one adolescent reported that the priest washed his back and feet in a shared shower and then asked him to wash the priest’s genitals, while the second brother described different but comparable inappropriate acts.
The victims stated that their mother had known the priest since before their birth, reinforcing the relationship of trust.
