Data released by the UK's 'Office for National Statistics' shows that the neonatal mortality rate in 2022 was the highest it has been in over a decade.
2021 recorded a similarly high rate of neonatal deaths, writes Expose-News.com (22 March).
The stillbirth rate was also much higher in 2021 and 2022 than in 2020 and 2019.
The figures show that the stillbirth rate per 1,000 live births in England and Wales was 4.0 in 2022 and 4.1 in 2021. This compares with a rate of just 3.8 in 2020 and 3.9 in 2019.
Meanwhile, the rate of neonatal (under 4 weeks old) deaths per 1,000 live births in England and Wales was the highest for over a decade in 2022, at 3.0 deaths per 1,000 live births.
This compares with 2.9 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2021. Meanwhile, 2020 saw one of the lowest rates of neonatal deaths for over a decade, with 2.8 deaths per 1,000 live births.
