Jésus de Nazareth est un juif de Galilée (Palestine),qui apparaît dans le cercle de Jean le Baptiste avant de s’engager, entouré de quelques disciples, dans une courte carrière de prédication itinérante d’un à deux ans et demi, essentiellement en Galilée, en pratiquant guérison et exorcismes.
Il suscite engouement et ferveur, s’attirant la méfiance des autorités politiques et religieuses, avant d’être arrêté, condamné et crucifié vers l’an 30 à Jérusalem pendant la fête juive de la Pâque, sous l’administration du gouverneur romain Ponce Pilate.
L’annonce de sa résurrection par ses disciples, qui le reconnaissent comme le messie et transmettrons son histoire et ses enseignements, donnera naissance au christianisme.
Jésus est condamné par Ponce Pilate à être crucifié après s’être lavé les mains de sa mort en la portant uniquement sur la conscience des juifs. Son exécution a lieu un vendredi, veille du Chabbat, sur une croix surmontée d’un titulus portant l’inscription : « Roi des juifs »

Les Evangiles sont les seuls documents canoniques pour connaître les circonstances de la mort de Jésus de Nazareth. Selon l'Évangile de Marc (le plus ancien en date), rédigé en grec, Jésus serait mort juste en dehors des murailles de Jérusalem, en un lieu appelé calvaire ou Golgotha (c'est-à-dire « lieu du crâne »). Là, il aurait été cloué sur un stauros (« croix » en grec) et pendu à un xylon (« bois » en grec) entre deux malfaiteurs que la tradition chrétienne désigne sous le nom de bon et mauvais larrons.
Il serait mort au bout de quelques heures.
