John Sheppard, Te Deum.
John Sheppard (c1515-1558), compositor inglés del que no se conoce dónde nació. Fue nombrado "Informator Choristarum" del Magdalen College de Oxford, y luego fue caballero de la Capilla Real británica. De él no se conocen demasiados datos y algunos de los que hay no puede comprobarse con certeza. Parece ser que fue enterrado el 21 de diciembre de 1558. Tuvo un hijo, Nathan, que fue ordenado sacerdote. La calidad de la música de Sheppard es sorprendente y destaca sobre todo en el cantus firmus de sus misas. Igualmente, sus himnos y otras obras religiosas son especialmente destacables, por su grandiosidad y su dominio de la polifonía que habitualmente es a 8 voces.
Si la obra latina de Sheppard se conserva relativamente bien, la compuesta en lengua inglesa ha sufrido peor trato. Gran parte de ella fue escrita durante el reinado de Eduardo VI de Inglaterra. Como puedes ver, se trata de himnos a pequeña escala pero que están llenos de serenidad y unción. Sin duda, compuestos para que el público supiese lo que se estaba cantando y, por qué no, para que también lo cantasen. Además, Sheppard tampoco busca ningún tipo de espectacularidad ya que la obra está compuesta para cuatro voces. Es muy inglesa en su estilo, pero tiene ese carácter directo que logra emocionarnos.
