The Courtyard of the Gentiles, the Pontifical Council for Culture's outreach to nonbelievers, is hosting “Faith, Culture, and the Common Good” at Georgetown University.
“In the US, political power has a vested interest in the religious world and has built strong relations with it, but at the same time the US is proud of its secular nature and the identity of the State is quite marked,” Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the pontifical council's president, said in an interview with Vatican Radio. “It will be interesting to observe the balance … between these two aspects.”
“Our national dialogue regarding the role of religion in public life and its contributions to the common good is at a critical juncture,” added Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington. “The Courtyard of the Gentiles format offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between religious faith and culture from a fresh perspective.”
The event begins on April 9 with a concert that “features artists of diverse faiths-- MCs Talib Kweli, Jin, Poetic Pilgrimage, AmKoullel, The Narcicyst, and Mandeep Sethi and DJ Boo-- in a performance showcasing interreligious diversity and tolerance through the hip hop lens,” according to the event program.
On April 10, Cokie Roberts, a critic of Catholic teaching on human life and marriage, will moderate a panel discussion entitled “Realizing the Common Good,” and Paul Elie, senior fellow at Georgetown University's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, will moderate a discussion on “Faith, Culture, and Community.” Each panel discussion is followed by “Tents of Dialogue” breakout sessions.
Following an interfaith celebration at a Jesuit parish featuring “readings, reflections, and songs from American traditions on the common good, justice, and freedom,” the event concludes with a dramatic performance of a Flannery O'Connor short story.
